Programming help - where do i start?

i want to learn how to program so i can at make small games on my own. i have heard that C and C++ are the most common ones for programing games. Where would i start to begin learning them?

I do not want to learn this for a job, or go to college for it, i want to use it for person projects.Programming help - where do i start?
C and C++ take a long time to learn in order to get to game programming. If you are just doing it as a hobby, you might be better with something like Game Maker (http://yoyoogames.com/), which while starts out simple, can still get very advanced.

Note however that unregisteredGame Maker can make only 2D games. Basic 3D games can only be made by registering (Approximately US$20 one time fee).

If you do decide to go down the C/C++ route. I would recommend learning C++ (As opposed to C). An alright tutorial can be found at http://www.cplusplus.com/ and a good free C++ compiler (The program you will need) is Dev-C++ (http://www.bloodshed.net/dev/devcpp.html鈥?/a>Programming help - where do i start?
I would recomend you visit microsoft

http://www.microsoft.com/express/

and download visual basic, visual c sharp visual c plus

You can find other compilers both free and costly

but i prefer this.

Just learning the popular ones is not neccessarly best thing

explor other programming language once you get the feel with this
